American Oldsmobile

The main intention of launching Alero was to introduce a substitute of Achieva and Cutlass.. In April 1998, the production of Alero was started and the production center was in Lansing, Michigan. In the history of Oldsmobile, the name of Alero is significant for two prime reasons: Alero was the last compact car of Oldsmobile range, and Alero was the last brand lunched under the brand name of Oldsmobile. The production of this brand ended April, 2004.

The design of the car was a R&D process of General Motors and it was never scheduled to be on road in real life. The exceptionality of this model was its V6 powered sport coupe. On tasting board, the model was named as Alero Alpha. It was termed as a concept car.

Alero had a good market in European countries and there it was known as Chevrolet Alero but the only available version was sedan. In Europe the logo of Oldsmobile was retained to exploit the legacy of Oldsmobile brand, the name of Chevrolet was seen in grill and rear fascia in the later versions of 2000 Alero. Later on this car was replaced by the brand Epica/Evanda by Daewoo sourced Chevrolet.

General Motors launched various models of Alero to take public poll on its popularity and there are variants like Alero 0SV- it was an Oldsmobile brand tasting venture. GM wanted to assess the popularity of the brand name of Oldsmobile in the spare parts. Alero OSV II was another experiment and it was available in dark green color. DOHC engine was introduced here. Alero 442- It was a reminiscent of Oldsmobile 442 version with white golden or white pink strips. Alero convertible- It was a venture targeting the young generation with a funky and sports look and introducing soft top in sedan.

Alero California- This version was available in some selected color and sporty accessories. Alero Pace car- Presented with white and yellow strips it was launched by GM as a safety car.
